Holston’s studies and drawings are very often the artist’s
initial exploration of ideas and concepts for larger paintings.
The attention to form, line and color for which he is well-known
and respected in his paintings, is reflected in the disciplined
approach to these smaller compositions. Although these small
studies and drawings, often in acrylic, gouache or charcoal,
may help him to develop his ideas on composition and color
for the subsequent works, they are stand alone works of art
that evoke all of the feeling and power of their larger counterparts.
